Getting started

Create your account

Open Kanakkedu, choose Create account, tick that you accept the Terms and Privacy policy, then enter the 6-digit code we email you. Next you connect an authenticator app and set your Kanakkedu PIN. The dashboard's Getting started list then walks you through your first book, entry, bank account and budget.

Your first Spend Book

A Spend Book is one ledger: the household, a trip, tuition income. Choose Spend Books → New book, give it a name and an opening balance, then add entries with Cash In and Cash Out.

Quick entries

Save entries you repeat (milk, petrol, chai) as quick templates: they appear as one-tap chips when you add an entry, together with your recent entries.

Signing in and security

Authenticator codes

Every sign-in asks for your password and a 6-digit code from an authenticator app such as Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator. Make sure your phone's time is set automatically; a wrong clock gives wrong codes.

Lost your phone?

Use one of your recovery codes on the sign-in page to set up a new authenticator. If you have none left, email support@kanakkedu.online from the address you use for Kanakkedu. We confirm it is you before resetting it.

Your Kanakkedu PIN

Bank accounts, locked books, backups and a few other private areas ask for your PIN. Forgot it? Set a new one in Profile → Security with your password and an authenticator code.

Forgot your password

Use Forgot password on the sign-in page. We email a single-use link that works for 30 minutes.

Books and entries

Import a bank statement

In a book choose Import and pick your bank's statement as Excel (.xlsx) or CSV. Kanakkedu finds the columns, shows every row first and marks duplicates and rows already in the book, so nothing is added twice. PDF statements are not supported: download Excel or CSV from your net banking.

Smart rules

Smart rules fill in the category and payment mode from words in the description, for example "swiggy, zomato → Food". They work when you type an entry and when you import a statement, and you can always change the result.

Undo, history and the recycle bin

Deleted an entry by mistake? Tap Undo, or find it in the Recycle bin for 30 days. Each entry's history shows who changed what and when.

Share a book with family

Open the book, then Members. Choose view, add entries, or edit. Everyone uses their own Kanakkedu account, and the book's activity log shows who did what.

Month-end review

The Month end tab in a book lists entries without a category, possible duplicates, recurring entries not yet posted and banks not yet checked. Close the month when it looks right.

Planning ahead

Safe to spend

The dashboard's Safe to spend is your balance minus every bill, EMI and subscription due before your next income, and minus any cushion you choose. Add your bills to the Money Calendar or Subscriptions for it to work well.

Subscriptions and EMIs

List Netflix, insurance premiums and loans in Subscriptions & EMIs to see what they cost a month and a year. Kanakkedu also spots regular payments in your entries and offers to track them. The EMI calculator shows interest and the outstanding amount.

Renewals and expiry dates

Keep insurance, PUC, FC, warranties, passport and licence dates in Renewals. You get a reminder before each one expires. Only dates are stored, never the documents.

Reconcile a bank account

In Bank Accounts, choose Reconcile, enter the balance from your bank statement, and Kanakkedu shows the difference and the entries that may explain it.

Family money

Split and settle

In a shared book, split a Cash Out entry between members. The Split & settle tab shows who owes whom in the fewest payments. Splits don't change the book's balance.

Lent and borrowed

Note money given to or taken from relatives and friends in Lent & Borrowed, with an optional date to get it back and gentle reminders.

Pocket-money books

Spend Books → Pocket-money book creates a small book for a child, adds the allowance automatically every week or month, and lets your child record spends from their own account within a limit you set.

Trusted contact

In Settings → Trusted contact, name one person who may ask for view-only access to your Spend Books if you are inactive for 90, 180 or 365 days. You get an email straight away and have 7 days; signing in cancels it.

Receipts and storage

Scan a receipt

Attach a photo of a bill to an entry and tap Scan. Kanakkedu reads the total, date and shop name on our own server and fills empty fields for you to check. Printed bills work best.

Your 10 GB

Receipts and saved backups use your storage; entries and books do not. Profile → Storage shows what you use. When it is full, new uploads stop until you delete old backups or empty the recycle bin. Nothing is removed for you.

Backups and your data

Backups

Create a backup from Profile → Backup & Restore, or switch on automatic daily, weekly or monthly backups. Before a restore Kanakkedu shows what is in the backup next to what you have now, and makes a safety copy first.

Download all my data

Profile → Storage → Download all my data gives you one Excel file with every book, entry, account, budget, investment, goal and reminder.

Delete your account

Profile → Delete account. You have 30 days to change your mind by signing in; after that everything is permanently deleted.
